The Bow River

Home The Bow River

The Bow River, with its origins in the Canadian Rockies, offers an unparalleled fly fishing experience, particularly renowned for its trophy-sized Rainbow and Brown Trout.

As a fishing guide company, we’re here to guide you through the best fishing adventures on the Bow River, highlighting everything from flow rates and seasons to the types of fish and the breathtaking landscape.

Flow Rate and Seasons

The flow rate of the Bow River is a crucial aspect for anglers, influencing fish behavior and habitat. Originating from Bow Lake in Banff National Park, the river’s flow is relatively steady, affected by seasonal runoff and rainfall. Optimal fishing conditions are typically found from late spring to fall, when the river’s volume is stable or gradually decreasing.

Fishing Seasons

The Bow River’s fishing seasons offer unique experiences throughout the year:

  • Spring marks the beginning of the fishing season with the first insect hatches.
  • Summer provides long days ideal for dry fly and nymph fishing.
  • Fall is celebrated for aggressive fish behavior and stunning scenery.
  • Winter fishing, though challenging, offers a peaceful and rewarding experience for the dedicated angler.

Fish Species and Fly Fishing Options

The Bow River is home to a variety of fish species, with wild, trophy-sized Rainbow and Brown Trout being the main attractions. Anglers can also find Cutthroat Trout, Brook Trout, and Mountain Whitefish. The river supports several fly fishing techniques:

  • Nymphing is often the most productive method, suitable for deeper waters.
  • Dry Fly Fishing excels during hatches, allowing anglers to target visibly rising trout.
  • Streamer Fishing is effective for catching the river’s largest trout, using larger prey imitations.

Landscape and Wildlife

The landscape along the Bow River is as diverse as it is beautiful, offering views of the Rockies, rolling hills, and open plains. This rich environment is also home to an array of wildlife, including deer, elk, bears, and various bird species, adding an extra layer of excitement to the fishing experience.

Fishing the Bow River

The Bow River has become famous for its hard fighting, acrobatic, wild, trophy Rainbow and Brown Trout. It is a world class trout stream. The 50 mile stretch between Calgary and Carseland is known as the “famous” Bow, dubbed “the Blue Ribbon Bow” by author Jim McLennan. This is where we concentrate all our fly fishing efforts and guests are presented with unequaled fly fishing possibilities. This stretch of blue ribbon trout water provides some of the best opportunities in the world for catching a trophy trout.

Of Nymph, dry fly, and streamer fly fishing, Nymphing is by far the most common and productive method of the three. The concept of the method is to suspend flies at the same depth the fish are feeding. The Bow River is extremely fertile, so much so that the trout do not need to move far to eat. Although this is not necessarily the preferred method of most fly fishers, nymphing the “Hooker Method” will keep you busy the entire time.

Dry fly fishing (the most desired method of fly fishers) can be very effective depending on the time of year, time of day, and brightness. There will be possibilities of casting to rising trout feeding on a hatch or blind casting attractor patterns representing stoneflies or grasshoppers. Taking on the attractor patterns can be explosive.

The Bow River has big fish, big fish eat big things, and streamer fishing, although not always, can produce some of the bigger fish of the year. Typically streamers are stripped away from the bank as we drift a comfortable cast away. It takes a bit to get proficient but can be very rewarding.
