A Float Tube approach to still water fly fishing. Fly Fishing Still Waters
Fly Fishing Alberta's Potholes and Alpine Lakes

Alberta isn't what usually comes to mind when someone mentions trophy rainbows and still waters. However, over the past few years the still water fishing in Alberta is finally starting to get the attention and recognition it deserves. With the help of aeration and special regulations, a few of the pothole lakes in the southern part of the province are now consistently producing rainbows over five pounds. These lakes are very fertile and produce amazing growth rates amongst the trout. Some have three year old fish that can push the 10 pound mark. As most of these lakes are accessible by vehicles, fishing can be done from shore, belly boats, or drift boats.

A Float Tube approach to still water fly fishing. In addition to the pothole lakes of the parkland and prairies there are a number of alpine lakes fairly accessible that have excellent cutthroat and grayling fishing. As the growing season in these lakes is quite short, most of them support fish to one pound. However, a few of our secret lakes again protected with special regulations have cutties to 5 pounds. These lakes are fished with either belly boats or from shore. They provide amazing scenery both while fishing and on the drive to them. Although most of these lakes are not difficult to get to, they do require some hiking, so being in shape is a good idea.

Check out what all the excitement is about in the new Alberta fishery ... still waters. We highly recommend combining one of the many still water opportunities with a float trip on the Bow River or a Walk and Wade.
