Besides the float trips on the Bow and Red Deer rivers, there are a number of smaller rivers Hookers provide guided trips on. Located southwest of Calgary 1½ hours are some of the best walk and wade fly fishing rivers in the province. These rivers flow through the Rocky Mountains and foothills and provide the ultimate wilderness experience.
The Crowsnest and Livingston Rivers, to name a couple, are very productive for rainbow and cutthroat trout that average 12" to 14". Bull trout are also found in these waters especially in the fall as they migrate to spawn; these aggressive predators can reach 10 pounds plus. In addition to these more well-known rivers, there are also a number of other "secret" rivers in the area that can also be very productive.
These crystal clear rivers are cold, full of boulders, overhanging trees, and subsurface structure providing excellent habitat for trout. The towering spruce trees along the banks provide breathtaking views at every bend, with the Rockies as the backdrop. Dry flies are the method of choice, however, depending on the weather, hatches and time of year, nymphing and streamers can be more productive.
Combine a Walk and Wade to one of these fantastic streams with your Bow River float trip, and it will be a holiday trip you won't soon forget.
