Angling Licenses
Sportfishing License regulations in Alberta

It is important that anglers coming to fly fish the Bow River be aware of the Alberta Sportfishing Regulations as they pertain to the portions of the Bow River to be fished on a Bow River Hookers fly fishing trip. Bow River Hookers fly fishing guides are fully aware and understand these regulations and will ensure you are adhering to the regulations throughout your fly fishing trip. Although our guides know the regulations, your understanding will prevent any misconceptions along the way.

Definitions

  • WIN - Wildlife Identification Number - good for 5 years.
  • Angling License - Sportfishing License
  • Alberta Resident - A person whose primary residence is in Alberta.
  • Canadian Resident - A person whose primary residence is in a province of Canada other than Alberta.
  • Non-Canadian Resident - A person whose primary residence is outside of Canada.
  • Bait - includes, but is not restricted to: corn, cheese, marshmallows, meat, maggots, meal worms, earthworms, wax worms, gammarus shrimp, leeches, terrestrial insects, the larvae, pupae or adults of aquatic insects (e.g., stonefly, mayfly, caddis fly), bait fish, parts of fish, fish eggs, scented baits, power baits and all additives that scent or flavour artificial baits and lures.

License Requirements

  • All Non-Canadian residents over the age of 15 require a WIN and an Angling License.
  • All Canadian residents over the age of 15 require a WIN and an Angling License.
  • All Alberta residents between the ages of 16 and 64 require a WIN and an Angling License.

Alberta Resident License Requirements

  • WIN Card - $8.00 (good for 5 years), and
  • Angling (Sportfishing) License: Annual $25.66

Canadian Resident License Requirements

  • WIN Card - $8.00 (good for 5 years), and
  • Angling (Sportfishing) License: Annual $25.66

Non-Canadian Resident License Requirements

  • WIN Card - $8.00 (good for 5 years), and
  • Angling (Sportfishing) License: 1-day $26.63, or
  • Angling (Sportfishing) License: 5-day $47.63, or
  • Angling (Sportfishing) License: Annual $70.90

Bow River Regulations

  • It is unlawful to use a hook that is not a barbless hook.
  • Daily kill limit is one (1) trout under 35 centimeters (13.75 inches). All Trout over 35 centimeters (13.75 inches) must be released. Rocky Mountain Whitefish limit is five (5) over 30 centimeters (11.8 inches). While the regulations allow anglers to kill one trout under 35 centimeters (13.75 inches) per day, Bow River Hookers guides exclusively practice catch-and-release. There will be no fish killed on a Bow River Hookers fly fishing trip. All fish caught will be released.
  • The sections of the Bow River where Bow River Hookers conduct their fly fishing trips are subject to a bait ban.
  • It is unlawful to use a line in angling equipped with more than three hooks.

Angling Licenses On-Line

  • Angling Licenses may be purchased on-line at AlbertaRELM.com. If you have fished in Alberta in the last 5 years, you will have a WIN Card. If you have not fished in Alberta in the last 5 years, the first thing you will need to do is to purchase a WIN Card. Once you have purchased a WIN Card you will be able to purchase your Angling License.
